Summary:An experiment to study the nutrient intake and dry matter digestibility of diet in lactating dairy cows fed urea ammonia treated rice straw as source of roughage to replace napier grass was carried out at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Gajah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Four lactating dairy cows which had been lactating for 5 month, with initial live weight 345.75 approx 40.92 kg and daily milk production 9.34 approx 0,581 were used in this experiment. The cows were divided into two groups with balance sample cross over design, consisted of two treatments, namely the utilization of napier grass (R0) and urea ammoniated treated rice straw (R1) as a source of roughage. Roughage and water were given unrestricted. However, concentrate was fed 1.0 kg per 1.51 of milk produced. The result showed that dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and energy intake between the two treatments were not significantly different (P more than 0.05). Crude protein (CP) intake in R1 was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than that in R0, but the dry matter digestibility of the diet at R1 was significantly lower than that in R0 (P less than 0,05). Based on the results of the experiment, it can be concluded that replacing napier grass with urea ammonia treated rice straw did not affect DM, NDF and energy intake (P more than 0.05).
