Summary:The development and spread of modern maize varieties have contributed substantially to increase maize production in Indonesia. Collaborative breeding among national and international breeding programs resulted in the development and release of 66 maize varieties (25 open pollinated varieties and 41 hybrids) in Indonesia from 1956 to 1999. Some of these varieties have been widely adopted and produced by public and private companies and tremendously increased maize production in recent years. Prior to the first hybrid (C1) released in 1983, the average annual maize production in Indonesia was 3.4 million tons during 1950-88. In 1983, total production was 5.1 million tons and increased to 6.6 million tons in 1998. At the same time, productivity almost doubled from 1.7 to 3.0 t/ha.
