Summary: | Host plants are badly needed for the growth of sandalwood. Without host plants, the growth will be inhibited, starting at 4-5 months old. The host plant has a good effect on height and diameter growth, and leaf development, besides it can increase the development of haustoria on sandalwood roots and increase the absorption of phosphorus and potassium. Of the five kinds of host plants being tried, red pepper and calliandra have the best influence on the growth of sandalwood and this effect can be seen at 5-6 months old. Lantana is rather good, kayu merah is less good and lamtorogung is not good in stimulating the growth of sandalwood. The growth of the host plant is not inhibited by sandalwood, it even increases its growth. Between the sandalwood and its host plant occurred a beneficial interaction. In the construction of nurseries and sandalwood plantations red pepper and calliandra are suggested to be used as their host plants. Further research is required about the interaction between sandalwood and other host plants and the mechanism which affect those interaction. |
