Summary:An unknow disease of sugar beet was observed in Hungarian sugar beet-growing areas. Symptomps were similar to low sugar syndrom (Syndrome des Basses Richesses) disease described in France. During the period of 2001-2003, symptomps of the disease were found in all tested areas of Hungary with varying incidence. UV-light microscopy of DAPI-strained semi-thin longitudinal sections of the symptom-showing sugar beet vascular tissues showed the presence of DNA-rich objects in phloem sieve tubes.
