Summary: | In the course of economic transformation the Hungarian quick freezing industry has sucessfully kept its international markets and partly even counterbalanced the decrease in domestic consumption, caused by the drop of the purchasing power of the population, by means of increasing its exports. The industry is in the vanguard of introducing systems assuring food safety and high quality. Developments performed, and internal services introduced under the cooperation of British partners may serve as an example for other sectors of the food industry. Starting from an analysis of the 1991 situation (strong and weak points, possibilitiess), measures taken since that year are described, the present situation is characterized, and trends of further measures are outlined. A Prerequisite of progress is to give the companies state subsidies not only for expanding their export capacities but also for developing their existing capacities towards quality improvement, and for covering market research and marketing costs connected with the development of new products. The companies must endeavour to extend food safety systems to the deliverers of raw materials and other articles needed for their activities, and to establish systems of long-term cooperation based on mutual interest. A development of food and quality safety systems (by means of a comprehensive application of GMP principles) in order to obtain EFSIS certificates may add to a further improvement of the competitiveness of companies on international, markets due to good product quality |
