Summary:History has provent that, after general economic bottoms, the development of agriculture always starts with that of plant production. This trend can also be observed at present, whereas a conscious sequence of actions which would promote the dynamizing impact of plant production is lacking. In such a process, especially as reflected by the Hungarian EU accession, quality in the broader sense of the word plays a determinative role, whereas the need for protecting the natural resources and the environment highlights qualitative increase in a different way, limiting it and, at the same time, indicating the direction of progress towards an unlimited qualitative development. This is why we have formulated our slogan "Quality in every quantity!" In order to develop plant production towards better quality, certain negative consequences of Hungarian historical heredity (such as: rural overpopulation along with an inevitable rise of labour productivity and with the improvement of employment, as well as the solution of the financing of plant production under the circumstances of a general lack of capital, and the settling of the land question) must be liquidated, so that there be a harmony between the motive power of proprietors' interests on the one hand, and rational farm structure, on the other hand. Tasks to be solved are especially urgent if opposed to future challenges, quality, sustainability, and competitiveness. As for the exploitation of the dynamizing role of plant production, marketing chains of cooperation coordinated on a market basis may serve as a framework, among the obstacles of which the lack of up-to-date principal and theoretical fundaments, and the limiting role of financing can be mentioned in the first place. One the possible trends of development is indicated by the quality security system combined with integrated technologies, along with an environmentally conscious management. Furthermore, such farming model systems are necessary as combine site conditions with the structure of activities, farm size, and skills. Taking the determinations of plant production into account, development towards better quality also provides for changes in farming structure, which concerns crop farming, the sectors of horticulture, and also forestry in particular
