Summary: | Whereas among the actors of the vegetable oil producing sector in Hungary, the vegetable oil industry is already suiting European standards at present, the producers of raw material will have to solve a lot of new tasks in the course of the entry of Hungary into the European Union. The latter will open our markets to he countries of Europe, with which Hungary will have to compete in regard to first-class quality and prices in both domestic and foreign trade. Adequate qualitative security, information and controlling systems must be established along the entire product way, and in the agricultural phasis the prerequisites of a technical and technological closing-up must be created. Although the following round of discussing the GATT/WTO agreement (which may cause changes aspecially in the field of the protection of domestic markets and of a decrease in subsidies) will begin in 1999, at present it is still difficult to fercastits impacts. The standpoint of the Brussels administration and its recommendation for Hungary (i.e., to prepare our entry into the European Union according to its present produce), as well as prospective changes in the European Union do not influence the present stage of actrivities. This present stage of our preparing for the EU accession concerns both the short-term and long-term tasks of the vegetable oil verticality, among which quality and competitiveness play a prominent role. The vegetable oil verticality of Hungary exhibits a rather contradictory picture. Our advantages on these markets greatly derive from good quality. The first-class quality of our oil plants is internationally recognized, whereas the technical and technological conditions of production are more and more lagging behind that in advanced western countries. There is even a market loss (causing serious harm for the raw material producing phase) possible, should the present trend of degradation continue. On the other hand, however, due to technical development during the last years the country's vegetable oil industry has come abreast of advanced western countries, since the structure and quality of its products, and its competitiveness have improved. Unfortunately, the chronological horizon of the data quoted in the present paper is not identical in consequence of the limits of information and statistics (data of the Central Statistical Office, international statistics, data supplied by the industry) available |
