On-farm evaluation of pipeline haricot bean genotypes in major bean producing areas of southwestern Ethiopia

Two candidate bean genotypes (ICA 15541 and MX 2500-19) for relase were verfied on farmers field in the major bean growing areas of Southwestern Ethiopia, namely Asendabo, Ghimbo, Shishinda, Gojeb for three consecutive years (1996-98). The design was a RCB with a plot size of 100 square m. In the 19...

Summary:Two candidate bean genotypes (ICA 15541 and MX 2500-19) for relase were verfied on farmers field in the major bean growing areas of Southwestern Ethiopia, namely Asendabo, Ghimbo, Shishinda, Gojeb for three consecutive years (1996-98). The design was a RCB with a plot size of 100 square m. In the 1996 and 1997 crop season, G2816 and Brown speckled were included as checks and in the third year G2816 (Gofa), a regional release variety for eastern Ethiopia, was replaced by A-262. In the 1997 crop season G2816 (Gofta) out yielded all the genotypes with a mean grain yield of 1800 kg ha sup(-1). The lowest mean grain yield 1430 kg ha sup(-1) was scored by Brown speckled. ICA 15541 showed better disease resistance to angular leaf spot, common bacterial blights and rusts whereas Brown speckled showed better resistance to floury leaf spot than all the other genotypes. In the 1998 crop season, A-262 a medium seeded group, was the top yielder followed by Mx-2500-19, ICA 15541 and Brown speckled. Farmers preferenced ICA 15541 for its seed size, seed color and marketability. Among the criteria set by farmers, earliness, size and number of pods per plant, seed color and seed size were found to be the most important selection criteria to be considered in bean variety selection activities.
