Hypocotyl cultures of Digitalis obscura L.: A relation between morphogenesis and cardiotonic glucosides production

The effect of several growth regulators on cardenolite synthesis has been investigated in explants of Digitalis obscura L. hypocotyls. The newly formed tissues and organs have the capacity to biosynthesize cardenolides, although to a lesser extent than in leaves of D. obscura plantlets. The synthesi...

Summary:The effect of several growth regulators on cardenolite synthesis has been investigated in explants of Digitalis obscura L. hypocotyls. The newly formed tissues and organs have the capacity to biosynthesize cardenolides, although to a lesser extent than in leaves of D. obscura plantlets. The synthesis of these glucosides is closely related to the morphogenic response induced by the different hormonal treatments tested. The best results were obtained when hypocotyls were cultured on caulogenic media (IAA/BA or NAA/BA)
