Microbiological study on lettuce and tomato (Lactuca sativa and Solanum lycopersicum), 1: Microbiological indicators

In 48 samples of lettuce and 49 other ones of tomato from a market of Granada (Spain) the total aerobic plate count, NMP total coliforms and NMP E. coli has been determined. The value of aerobic bacteria in lettuce are between 10 arise 3 - 10 arise 8 bacterias per gram and 10-17 arise 7 for the toma...

Summary:In 48 samples of lettuce and 49 other ones of tomato from a market of Granada (Spain) the total aerobic plate count, NMP total coliforms and NMP E. coli has been determined. The value of aerobic bacteria in lettuce are between 10 arise 3 - 10 arise 8 bacterias per gram and 10-17 arise 7 for the tomato; the total coliforms value has been found in both vegetables is 0-10 arise 5 coliform/g and the same number for E. coli. The linear correlation coefficients of these parameters were significance statistics for the tomato samples and for the total coliforms/E. coli relationship in lettuce, and chi square analysis shows a no correlation between aerobic bacteria/E. coli in both vegetables
