Effects of the addition of sunflower oil to the diet and of milking frequency on milk yield and composition in Assaf ewes

Ten lactating Assaf ewes were allocated to two experimental groups of 5 animals each, based on milk production, body condition and live weight. Ewes were individually housed in neighboring pens and were offered alfalfa hay ad libitum and 34 g concentrate/kg live body weight with 0 (Control group) or...

Summary:Ten lactating Assaf ewes were allocated to two experimental groups of 5 animals each, based on milk production, body condition and live weight. Ewes were individually housed in neighboring pens and were offered alfalfa hay ad libitum and 34 g concentrate/kg live body weight with 0 (Control group) or 3.8% sunflower oil (Girasol group). The experiment was divided in two consecutive periods: 3 weeks with both udder halves milked twice a day (period 1), and 4 weeks with 2 milkings in one and 1 milking in the other udder half (period 2). Feed intake was recorded daily. Milk yield was recorded weekly, a sample being taken for chemical analysis. There were not significant differences (P>0.05) between groups on either alfalfa hay or concentrate intake. In period 1, when both udder halves were milked twice a day, there were not significant differences between diet groups (P>0.05) in milk yield. When milking frequency was reduced from twice to once daily (period 2) milk production decreased, this reduction being greater for animals of Control group than for ewes fed sunflower oil (35 vs. 21%).
