Dose effect of lithium chloride on the conditioned aversion to olive leaves in goats

To evaluate 2 doses of lithium chloride (LiCl) to induce aversion to olive tree leaves, a total of 15 dry and open Murciano-Granadina dairy goats were used. Summary:To evaluate 2 doses of lithium chloride (LiCl) to induce aversion to olive tree leaves, a total of 15 dry and open Murciano-Granadina dairy goats were used. Does were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups in which the intake of dry leaves of olive tree (novel feed) was measured with or without LiCl (175 or 200 mg/kg PV) individually dosed post intake. For aversion induction and first memory test, all the animals were individually penned during 10 d and fed tall fescue hay ad libitum. Aversion by LiCl took place on d 1 and on d 9. Aversion memory was evaluated in cafeteria tests of 1 h (d 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) and 30 min (d 16, 24, 31, 38 and 53). No more LiCl was given. Moreover, a memory test with a simulated olive tree in a rye-grass prairie was done on-field conditions. Olive tree leaf consumption in the averted groups was lower than in the control group (P < 0.05). Differences in individual behaviour were observed by treatment in pens and on field conditions. Use of LiCl was considered a useful tool for selective grazing and ecological bio-agriculture.
