Summary:Dairy goat industry in the Valencian Community is under restructure. In recent years, the number of farms has decreased, however the number of heads of dairy goats has increased, which suggests that small farmers are leaving the dairy industry, while farms with more census are those that remain. The aim of this report was to present a preliminary economic study to analyze the distribution of production costs in dairy goats. With this aim, 16 farms were selected and surveyed. The data (year 2008) were used to calculate the following economic indicators: Income, Variable Costs, Fixed Costs, Opportunity Costs, Total Costs, Gross Margins, Net Margin, Benefit and Profitability Thresholds. The average Net Margin per liter of milk was -0,26 euros and the average Benefit -0,63 euros. The average Profitability Thresholds without Opportunity Cost per liter was 0,89 euros. This should be the selling price of a liter of milk so that the Net Margin was zero. The average Profitability Thresholds with Opportunity Cost per liter was 1,23 euros. If a liter of milk was sold at this price, production would be carried out without losses and the Benefit would be zero.
