Summary:The use of the TDR signal to predict concentration of a saline trazer (Br-) through the soil is evaluated. Six TDR-based methods to estimate bulk electrical conductivity (sigma) on a range of standard KCl solutions are compared. Nadler.s method works the best in our conditions (r2 1:1= 0.988). Three models (linear, nonlinear and empirical) to predict soil solution electrical conductivity (sigma w) based on sigma and water content (theta) are experimentally tested on a laboratory set-up that included 24 hand packed soil columns as a combination of 6 salinity (Br-) levels and 4 moisture contents. The linear model (Rhoades.equation) predicted slightly better than the other two (r2 1:1= 0.986 vs. 0.976 and 0.983). Since this is a simpler model (3 vs. 4 parameters) it is thus recommended. Measurements made simultaneously with a four electrode salinity probe gave good correlation with those obtained with the TDR (r2 = 0.964). A good correlation was also found between tracer concentration in the soil solution and sigma w (r2 = 0.96). The method reveals itself as a robust tool for solute transport studies under controlled salinity conditions. Se eval.a el uso del m.todo del TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) para la estimaci.n de la concentraci.n de un i.n salino (Br-) utilizado como trazador en el suelo. Se comparan primeramente 6 m.todos para la obtenci.n de la conductividad el.ctrica aparente del suelo (sigma) a partir de la forma de la onda de TDR utilizando varias disoluciones patr.n acuosas de una sal del trazador (KCl). El m.todo de Nadler es el m.s adecuado en nuestras condiciones (r2 1:1= 0.988). Se evaluaron tres tipos de modelos (lineal, no-lineal y emp.rico) para estimar la conductividad el.ctrica de la disoluci.n del suelo (sigma w) a partir de los datos de sigma y el contenido de humedad (teta) obtenidos en un ensayo con 24 columnas de suelo (6 concentraciones salinas (BrK) x 4 niveles de humedad) empaquetado a su densidad natural. El modelo lineal (ecuaci.n de Rhoades) predice adecuadamente (r2 1:1= 0.986) y no existe mejora en la introducci.n de un modelo no-lineal m.s complejo. Se contrasta tambi.n el comportamiento de la sonda cl.sica de salinidad aparente del suelo de 4 electrodos (s4e) frente al TDR encontr.ndose una buena correlaci.n entre ambas medidas (r2 = 0.964), aunque la s4e arroja medidas sistem.ticamente inferiores. Finalmente se obtuvo un buen ajuste lineal entre las concentraciones del trazador Br- en la disoluci.n del suelo y sigma w (r2 = 0.96). El m.todo confirma ser una herramienta robusta para el estudio de transporte de un trazador salino a trav.s del suelo.
