Summary:According to various estimates, the Estonian forests hold 1 million to 3.5 million solid cubic meters of firewood for yearly usage. In reality, the usage was 3.479 million solid cubic meters already in 1997. However, every forester knows that an excessive amount of firewood, cutting waste, waste from lumber industry and coppice is still left over. Hence, the estimates were too modest, and the potential for usage is considerably greater. Instead of expensive cutting of the coppice on roadsides and along overhead lines, the coppice ought to be used as wood chips for heating and generating electricity. On the isle Saaremaa, there is an efficiently operating machine for both chipping coppice and branches, as well as for transporting chips into towns. Unfortunately, the use of chipped woods is not encouraged through legislation, the way it is in Europe and especially in the Nordic countries
