Summary:The purpose of this paper was to select the components of a multi-species fishery occurring in the northwestern Mediterranean. A problem of practical importance is that of discarding variables from a given set. The RV doefficient was used to measure the fitness of a solution to this probelm. Among 87 variables (species caught per month, weighted in kg) 14 are retained, giving an image of the population as close as possible to the one it would have had if all variables had been kept. The selected variables are the most fluctuating among the species caught. It is for the biologist to determine their relative significance and to identify those species which make up the by-catch.
