Summary:Two kinds of dicotyledonous plants (Sanguisorba officinalis or Plantago lanceolata) were added into a meadow hay (MH) for goats in amount of 10% during the years 2006 and 2007. Seven brown and white shorthaired goats were fed 6.25 kg of MH during the first week of the test and 6.25 kg of MH + 10% of Sanguisorba officinalis during the second week. During the third and fourth weeks, the animals were fed 6.25 kg of MH and 6.25 kg of MH + 10% of Plantago lanceolata, respectively. The average consumption of MH + P. lanceolata after 8 hours was higher by 44% than the consumption of MH alone. The addition of S. officinalis enhanced the consumption of MH only by 14%. Our results show that P. lanceolata is very tasty for goats. Thus, it may be used in cases of lack of appetite or to enhance feed intake.
