Summary:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility to use differential leukocyte counts in fish as an indicator of environmental pollution. Leukograms were assessed in bream, chub, perch and barb from the Otava, Berounka, Morava and Elbe rivers (Czech Republic). In total, 168 fish specimens were examined during 1999-2000. The index of stress loading (ISL), i.e. the ratio between the percentage of lymphocytes and myeloid series cells, was determined from the leukogram values. Significant differences between the localities were found. The lowest values of ISL were measured in fish from Berounka river. This gives evidence of decreased non-specific fish resistance and correlates with an increased concentration of organic pollutants in fish from this locality. The highest ISL values were found in fish from Otava river. These results correlated with low organic pollutants concentrations in fish tissues.
