Summary: | This article presents BETTERgen muscle+ (BGM+), the first swine gene marker in which inheritance is controlled exclusively by the sire, and summarizes the results of studies on relations between the occurrence of BGM+ and carcass conformation, growth intensity and meat quality. More than 2,000 pigs with or without BGM+ were monitored. The BGM+ animals had higher dressing percentage, proportion of rump steak and chops, whereas the backfat thickness was lower than the values in animals without BGM+. The first BGM+ sires are now available in the Czech Republic. |
