Summary:The genus Lactuca includes about l00 wild species, which are prevalent in Asia and Africa. The only cultivated species L. sativa is enormously variable and is grown around the world. Except L. sativa the information about taxonomy, ecogeography, morphology, anatomy, karyology, crossability, genetic and molecular variability, resistance to diseases and pests of other Lactuca spp. are very limited. A strategy and some preliminary information on a comprehensively based research (sampling, determination, herbarization, study of phenophases, morphological, anatomical and karyological studies, isozymes variability, resistance research) are given.
