Summary:A survey on the actual situation of breeding value estimation for reproduction traits in pig is given. The factors included in the linear models used for breeding value estimation of reproduction traits in different countries are reviewed. Recent estimates of genetic parameters (heritabilities, genetic correlations) are summarized. In future, work should be focused on the following problems: (i) Are parities to be treated as individual traits or as a repeated expression of the same trait? (ii) What is the best way for modelling the complex of factors herd-year-season (fixed versus random effect, number of observation in subclasses)? (iii) To what extent are the estimates of breeding values influenced by maternal effects and should maternal effects be included in the linear models for breeding value estimation? (iv) Which traits are to be chosen for an effective selection for reproductive performance?
