Abstract Mutagenic activities of substances of plant origin (extract Angelicae archangelica - alpha-angelicalactone, juglone, extract Humuli lupuli - emodine, hype-ricine, and psoralene) were tested with the aid of the Ames test in the prokaryotic model and low doses [approximating 0,1 LD(50)] and the micronucleus test on the eukaryotic model. In the Ames test the mutagenic effect has been found only in juglone and alpha-angelicalactone. In the micronucleus test a statistically significant higher freguency of micronuclei in comparison with controls has been found in all substances except angelicalactone namely in at least one of the concentration tested. The resulting effect of tinctures and extracts may differ according to the proportion of certain substances influencing genotoxicity which pass into these solutions. The results of the follow-up of these natural substances show that in many plants used as vegetables, spices, or medicinal herbs, it is possible to anticipate the presence of substances showing mutagenic activity in conditions in vivo and in vitro.
