Summary:We set out to examine the question whether, or how, the three-dimensional distribution of the annual photosynthetic capacity in a stand can be deduced from the local structure of the stand. Spatial distribution of photosynthetic production was calculated for a model spruce stand on the basis of a geometric radiation model and a simple shoot photosynthesis model, as well as two year's radiation data. A close relationship could be shown between photosynthetic production at one place in the stand and the corresponding shading needle area, by which we mean, the mean projected needle area index above this point.
