Summary: | Stable relations between the wingbud length of 5th-instar nymph and wing form of brown planthopper reared on different rice varieties and growth periods, and different densities have been found. The 5th-instar nymph with wingbud longer than 1.10mm emerge as female macropterous, with wingbud which is between 0.96 to 1.09mm emerge as male macropterous or female brachypterous, with wingbud shorter than 0.95mm emerge as male brachypterous. A key to adult wing form according to wingbud length and external genital characteristics of 5th-instar nymph is appended. |
