Summary:At present, there are substantial concerns about the impacts of anthropogenic sound in the oceans, and there is a particular focus by the public on impacts from military sonars which is having a substantial practical and fiscal impact on US Navy operations. Multiple research approaches are being employed to address the question of the possible extent and mechanisms for acoustic impacts, but progress has been slow. In part this is due to the multiplicity of organisms that may be affected and the difficulty in making repeat, controlled measures of impacts in the majority of sea creatures under real world conditions.
