Summary: | Marine and coastal information is necessary for sound decision making about sustainable utilisation of our oceanic and coastal resources. Due to inadequate data management tools, lack of information technology benefits in the minds of the ocean explorers, the marine data has not turned into information. The information thus gathered needs to lead into knowledge, knowledge to intelligence and finally the intelligence leads to wisdom. Information technology (IT) is a tool to this transformation, and hence the paper deals with the various mechanisms in converting marine data into marine knowledge engineering. Information technology is getting responsible for enabling network-centric computing of marine environmental data. The paper emphasises the state of art and the need for the establishment of compatible means of high quality data collection, and exchange of marine information related to the Indian Ocean area. Oceanographic data visualisation-cum-analysis based sustainable decision making is addressed in detail |
