Summary:This report describes the results of a Phase I archaeological survey of 120 acres at 2 Corps developed recreation areas, Lone Point (Shelby county) and Ho Wood (Moultrie county) Lake Shelbyville, Kaskaskia River, Illinois. The project will involve shoreline protection and campground relocation as part of the Shelbyville Shoreline Erosion Project. Pedestrian survey, screened shovel testing, and documentary research located 18 new archaeological sites (10 prehistoric, 8 historic) and 9 Isolated Finds (8 prehistoric, 1 historic). Six sites were identified at Lone Point, while the other 12 sites and all the isolated finds were identified at Ho Wood. Four prehistoric sites at Ho Wood and one historic site each at Lone Point and Ho Wood were recommended as potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The survey is one of the few extensive studies of upland areas away from the shoreline at the Lake and further reveals the types of upland sites present. The survey was conducted in August, 1996 by the Center for Archaeological Research, Southwest Missouri State University, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District.
