Summary:In her science teaching, Jane Elson had always treated the boys and girls the same but, having become conscious of how important it is for girls to see and experience female role models in science, she decided that for one specific event she would give the girls the opportunity to see the range of careers that studying STEM (science technology, engineering and maths) subjects can offer. Elson wanted to show the educational pathway from year 6 (ages 10-11) through to having a successful career in science as an adult. She invited secondary students, work placement university undergraduates and fully fledged scientists as well as 12 other primary schools, both state and independent, to send their girls (years 5 and 6) along to hear these speakers. To ensure the girls were able to participate actively, as well as be inspired by the speakers, a series of seven workshops was organized as part of the event. Herein, Elson describes advertising prior to the event, the day of the event, and feedback received from the girls following the event.
