Summary: | The present study investigated the reading strategies struggling readers might consciously rely on when they encountered difficulty. Sixty-one first- and second-grade struggling readers individually participated in a reading interview. The interview included five open-ended questions, and the responses were coded with different "strategies" categories. Results showed that struggling readers were likely to rely on the strategy of examining word parts, consulting outside resources and using context to determine word. Suggested future research and implications for practice were also discussed. |
