Summary:Taking into consideration the motivational needs of different students, the book discusses both internal and external motivators such as attaining a sense of achievement or leadership versus earning a physical reward such as candy or a field trip. These and other motivating factors are then incorporated into discussions of how to create productive research sessions. The book is organized into five chapters following the basic steps of the research process. After presenting motivational theories as a foundation for information skills instruction, the book moves on to methods of generating and maintaining interest in the research process and confidence in research abilities. From there, it explores the promotion of valuing information skills, satisfaction in research accomplishments, and continuing information exploration. Easy entry points in each chapter include "Motivational Moments" from real teachers and school media specialists that summarize research-based lesson plans that succeeded in both challenging and exciting students. Each chapter also includes a sample "Lackluster Lesson Plan" followed by the same lesson plan after a "Motivational Makeover."
