Summary: | Addressing the expressed needs of the writing community, this book presents writing lessons for intermediate, middle school, and secondary school students that incorporate the 5-step writing process into content areas as a natural part of the curriculum. The 30 lessons in this book involve students in large and small groups and in individual activities, call for minimum teacher preparation, and present successfully proven practices for involving students in writing as a learning tool and as a skill in communication. After an introduction that describes the process approach to writing instruction, lessons in the book address poetry, synonyms, newspapers, daily logs, writing a research paper, literary characters' emotions, advertising, lab reports, legislation, and children's literature. Each lesson presents objectives, materials needed, and advice on each stage of the writing process. Many of the lessons in the book also provide grade level modifications and extension activities. Appendixes present advice on teaching basic skills quickly, and instructions for creating bound books. (RS) |
