Summary:This annual report provides a statistical picture of the ethnic composition of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). It includes information on office staff, and on each elementary and secondary school, school for the handicapped, children's center, and adult and occupational education school. These statistics show that the Hispanic count has continually risen from 18.6 percent in 1966 to its current high point of 55.7 percent. Black student percentages rose from 21.4 percent in 1966 to 25.3 percent in 1973, and have, since that year, slowly declined to the current low of 18.2 percent. White student enrollment has steadily declined from 56.1 percent in 1966 to its current 17.7 percent. Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander students have slowly increased from 3.8 percent in 1966 to 8.1 percent in 1986. Students of American Indian or Alaskan Native heritage have remained at approximately the same count: in 1966 they were 0.1 percent and in 1986 they were 0.3 percent. The 1986 combined minority population of the district was 82.3 percent. In the appendix, Table A offers a two-page overview of LAUSD ethnic enrollment from 1966 to 1984. Appendix Table B reports data for 1985 and 1986. Appendix Table C compiles all 1986 grand total sections into a single display. (PS)
