Summary:This long range plan for the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) defines the course this international organization will pursue between 1986 and 1991, both for its membership and in relation to organizations and institutions outside of IFLA. The first chapter briefly describes a number of features and issues important to the organization: core programs, library associations, education of librarians and information specialists, status of libraries, user education and research, handicapped users, problems of ethnic and linguistic minorities, special issues, publications, regional activities, and cooperation with other international organizations. The second chapter reflects the increase in the number of IFLA's Core Programmes from three to six and includes a description of each: Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC); Universal Availability of Publications (UAP); International MARC Programme (IMP); Preservation and Conservation (PAC); Transborder Data Flow (TDF); and Advancement of Librarianship in the Third World (ALP). Information on the activities of IFLA's professional groups (divisions, sections, and round tables) are outlined in Chapter 3. The professional objectives, aims, and goals of these groups vary from general aspects to specialized actions and include special projects and statements of a more generalized nature. The document also includes: a list of acronyms, a preface, an introduction, a discussion of the organization of IFLA, a subject index of IFLA's professional activities, and an organization chart.
