Summary:The purpose of the study was to assess the reliability and the validity of the Ski Hi Language Development Scale which was designed to determine the receptive and the expressive language levels of hearing impaired children from birth to age 5. The reliability of the instrument was estimated through: (1) internal consistency, (2) inter-rater agreement, and (3) test/retest rater agreement. The validity of the Ski Hi LDS was estimated by: (1) a correlation technique to estimate concurrent validity, and (2) the Guttman scaling technique to estimate construct validity. The results of the study suggested that for this population the Ski Hi LDS is a reliable and valid instrument which can be a viable alternative to the language development scales presently in use.
