Summary: | The 1978 Annual State of the Environment Report of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) focused on four selected environmental problems of international significance: (1) chemicals and the environment; (2) malaria; (3) the use of agricultural and agro-industrial residues to increase the base for food production; and (4) the conservation of energy. This report, based on viewpoints expressed in discussion with members of various scientific communities, was designed to stimulate discussion and public awareness. This edition is structured in three parts: (1) the 1978 state of the environment; (2) the 1978 work report of UNEP on environmental issues; and (3) an independent commentary by an academic with an assessment of UNEP's achievements for that year.
