Summary: | Criticism of the American public school has abounded since its inception. Among the favorite indictments of the mid-1970s is the alleged failure of the public school to adequately teach fundamental skills. This book is intended to help the reader assess contemporary attacks on public schools in an intelligent and responsible manner. It draws on a wide and varied range of materials that help the reader adopt the proper critical perspective. More than 35 authors and many different types of materials reflecting a variety of evidentiary procedures are included: essays, empirical studies, anthropological impressions, and personal accounts. The readings emphasize that while American public schools have admittedly suffered from some glaring weaknesses--especially in the area of extending equality of educational opportunity to children from minority groups, on balance the record of performance is not one of which we should be ashamed.
