Summary:This study represents an attempt to present both sides of the behavioral objectives conflict in English and, after a discussion of the philosphical implications, to pose a suitable pedagogical compromise between the positions of the "behaviorists" and the "humanists." It is divided into three chapters: "Background Information and Positions on Behavioral Objectives: A Review" includes a historical perspective, a general definition of behavioral objectives, a summary of the arguments pro and con, and a review of the National Council of Teachers of English position on behavioral objectives; "Empirical Evidence and the Taxonomies" reviews studies conducted on the subject of objectives, examines the published taxonomies, and explores the ways in which taxonomies have been or might be adapted for English; and "A Behavioral Model for English," includes philosophical questions plaguing educators and a proposal for a pedagogically feasible solution to the groups for behaviorally-stated goals and those favoring more generalized objectives. Bibliographies follow each chapter and the document concludes with a brief summary and an annotated bibliography. (Author/RB)
