Summary:In order to test the validity of self-pacing, teacher-directed and self-paced programed German courses were set up for two years at Colorado State University. The Carroll-Sapon language aptitude test, attitude tests, and the Educational Testing Service standardized German tests were administered to conventional German classes as well as to both types of programed classes. Findings, illustrated on graphs, indicate that self-pacing has been overemphasized in programed courses, but conclusive results will depend on further research. (DS)
