Summary:PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of oxalic acid, dye intermediate, pharmaceuticals, etc., in high yield and selectivity, by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide with a nitrous acid ester in the presence of a platinum-group metal catalyst supported on a specific carrier. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is prepared by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide with a nitrous acid ester in the presence of a platinum-group metal catalyst, e.g. Pd, Pt, Rh, etc. supported on alumina having a specific surface area of <=m /g. The effective nitrous acid ester is that of 1-8C saturated monohydric aliphatic alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, etc. or an alicyclic alcohol such as cyclohexanol. The supporting of the platinum-group metal catalyst on alumina can be carried out by impregnation of alumina with an aqueous solution of corresponding platinum group metal salt, drying of the soluton, alkali-treatment with an aqueous solution of an alkali such as sodium hydroxide, reduction of the product, etc.
