In (I) R is a 5-membered heteroaromatic monocycle contg. an O- or S-atom and 1-3 N-atoms which is opt. substd. by: halogen; NO2; CN; amino; alkylamino; dialkylamino; alkylcarbonylamino; alkykartonyl; COOH; alkoxycarbonyl; carbamoyl; alkylaminocarbonyl; dialkylaminocarbonyl; arylaminocarbonyl (opt. substd. by halogen, NO2 or alkyl); aryl (opt. substd. by halogen, NO2, CN, alkyl or alkoxy); aralkyl, alkoxy, alkenoxy, alkynoxy, alkoxycarbonyloxy, aralkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, alkenylthio, alkenylthio, alkoxycarbonylalkylthio, arylthio, aralkylthio, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl (opt. substd. by halogen); alkylsulphinyl; alkylsulphonyl; alkoxyalkyl; aralkoxyalkyl; aryloxyalkyl; alkylthioalkyl; alkylsulphinylalkyl; alkylsulphonylalkyl; arylthioalkyl; arylsulphinylalkyl; arylsulphonyalkyl; carboxyalkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, opt. substd. aminocarzonylalkyl; cyanoalkyl; or cycloalkyl. In addn. R1 is H or alkyl; and R2 and R3 are H, opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, or an N-contg. heterocyclic residue; or NR2R3 is an opt. substd., opt. partially unsaturated mono- or bicycle to which benzene may be fused and which opt. contains further heteroatoms. (I) are herbicides which are well tolerated by crop plants but which show good activity against dicotyledonous and grassy weeds. Depending on the rate of application (I) may be used as total herbicides or as selective herbicides in crops such as beet, soya beans, cotton, rice and other cereals. (I) may be applied post- or pref., pre-emergence and the rate of application is generally 0.01-10 (pref. 0.01-5) kg/ha. At certain rates of application, some cpds. (I) show growth regulating activity.
