Summary:Elastic sealing body for use at high temp. is made of compacted, heat-resistant, flexible fibres, with a flexible, heat-resistant metal support which holds the body together in its compacted state. The fibres pref. consist of aluminium silicate, alumina, quartz, boron carbide, silicon carbide, glass, or their mixts., and long bodies may be made by stacking the seals together. The seals are pref. compacted longitudinally to 70-85% of the original length of the body, and the support pref. consists of a wire made of steel, brass, bronze, or high-alloy steel, with dia. 2.3-2.9 mm, esp. high-alloy steel wire 2.6 mm dia. The seals are e.g. used in furnaces operating a 800-1100 degrees C. contg., a special atmos., and retain their elasticity at high temp. and have long life.
