Hydroformylation process employing a cobalt-based catalyst in a non-aqueous liquid with improved catalyst recycling

Liquid phase formylation of olefinic compounds comprises reaction of unsaturated compound with H2 and CO under pressure and in presence of non-aqueous ionic liquid comprising quaternary ammonium and/or phosphonium salt, and in presence of cobalt complex with Lewis base ligand as catalyst. Summary:Liquid phase formylation of olefinic compounds comprises reaction of unsaturated compound with H2 and CO under pressure and in presence of non-aqueous ionic liquid comprising quaternary ammonium and/or phosphonium salt, and in presence of cobalt complex with Lewis base ligand as catalyst. Intermediate transfer of effluent is effected into vessel in which de-pressurisation takes place. A process for liquid phase formylation of olefinic compounds comprises (a) reaction of the unsaturated compound with hydrogen and carbon monoxide under pressure and in the presence of a non-aqueous ionic liquid comprising a salt Q+A-, in which Q+ is quaternary ammonium and/or phosphonium and/or sulfonium and A- is an anion, and in the presence of a cobalt complex with a Lewis base ligand as catalyst; and (b), separation of the final products. Between the reaction and separation stages an intermediate transfer of the effluent is effected into a vessel in which de-pressurisation takes place. An Independent claim is also included for the installation of the process.
