Summary:1369308 Production of ferrosilicon UNION CARBIDE CORP 16 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 12313/72 Addition to 1335351 Heading C7D A process for the manufacture of Fe-Si having 45-95% Si comprises forming homogeneous agglomerates from (a) a carbonaceous reducing agent, e.g. coal, coke (b) an iron-bearing material, e.g. iron oxide, (c) silica, (d) a bulking agent, e.g. drystraw, crushed corncobs, sawdust, (e) a binder. (a) and (b) are 100 mesh or finer, and (c) is in two fractions; a fine fraction of 48 mesh or finer, and a coarse fraction between 1/16" and ¢" diameter. The agglomerates are introduced to an electric arc furnace to produce the Fe-Si. The amount of (a) is between 85% and 120% of that stoichiometrically required for the reaction SiO 2 +2C # Si + 2CO. The average bulk density of the agglomerate is lower than 601b/ft3, and the ratio of fine SiO 2 to coarse SiO 2 is 0À5 to 2À0.
