1344846 Alkadienyl norbornene derivatives SNAM PROGETTI SpA 19 April 1971 [22 Jan 1970 (2)] 20422/71 Heading C5E The invention comprises alkadienyl norbornene derivatives of the Formula (I) wherein n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, R1 to R7 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, R8 and R9 are H, alkyl or aryl and B is an alkadiene group of Formula (II) or (III) wherein R13 and R14 are H or alkyl, and R10, R11, R12, R15 and R16 are H, alkyl or aryl. The compounds may be prepared by reaction between a Grignard reagent and a carbonyl compound, the Grignard metal, preferably Mg, being attached initially either to the starting material containing the norbornene nucleus or to an acyclic alkene which eventually forms group B. Alternatively the compounds of the invention may be prepared by Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and a triolefin having at least one pair of conjugated double bonds and an alkyl substituent on at least one of the carbon atoms of each of the double bonds of the pair. The reactions may be carried out at - 10‹ to 100‹ C. in the presence of an ether or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent.
