Disclosed is an absorbent structrure comprising an acidic or basic water-swellable, water-insoluble polymer, a basic or acidic second material, and, optionally, a buffering agent, wherein the absorbent structure exhibits desirable absorbent properties. Specifically, the present invention relates to an absorbent structure having the ability to absorb a large quantity of liquid while maintaining a substantially desired and balanced pH profile on or along the upper surface of the absorbent structure. The absorbent structure is useful in disposable absorbent products, such as those disposable absorbent products that are used to absorb body liquids. L'invention concerne une structure absorbante renfermant un polymère acide ou basique gonflable dans l'eau et hydrosoluble, une seconde substance basique ou acide, et éventuellement un tampon, cette structure absorbante présentant des propriétés d'absorption satisfaisantes. La présente invention concerne plus particulièrement une structure absorbante capable d'absorber une grande quantité de liquide tout en conservant un profil de pH sensiblement équilibré, sur ou le long de la surface supérieure de ladite structure absorbante, laquelle peut être utilisée dans des articles absorbants jetables, du type utilisé pour absorber des fluides corporels.
