A process for preparing a cyanoarylmethylamine by hydrogenating only one of the two nitrile groups of an aromatic dinitrile, wherein the reaction of an aromatic dinitrile at an enhanced conversion is attained with a reduced amount of a catalyst at low temperature under low pressure to give the objective compound in an enhanced yield. In the above process, a Raney catalyst activated by contact with hydrogen in the presence of a solvent is used as the catalyst in preparing a cyanoarylmethylamine from an aromatic dinitrile. The activated Raney catalyst is used preferably in an amount of 0.1 to 10 wt.%, still preferably 0.5 to 5 wt.% based on the aromatic dinitrile. The above activated Raney catalyst is preferably one prepared by activating a Raney catalyst containing nickel and/or cobalt in a solvent under a hydrogen atmosphere. L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation de cyanoarylméthylamine par hydrogénation de seulement un des deux groupes nitrile d'un dinitrile aromatique, la réaction d'un dinitrile aromatique, avec une conversion accrue, étant obtenue avec une quantité réduite d'un catalyseur à basse température et à basse pression pour donner le composé voulu avec un rendement élevé. Selon ledit procédé, un catalyseur de Raney activé par contact avec de l'hydrogène en présence d'un solvant est utilisé comme catalyseur pour préparer une cyanoarylméthylamine à partir d'un dinitrile aromatique. Le catalyseur de Raney activé est utilisé de préférence dans des proportions de 0,1 à 10 % en poids, de préférence de 0,5 à 5 % en poids, par rapport au dinitrile aromatique. Ledit catalyseur de Raney activé est de préférence préparé par activation d'un catalyseur de Raney contenant du nickel et/ou du cobalt dans un solvant sous atmosphère d'hydrogène.
