An assembly (58) comprising: a hollow cylindrical member or can (22) including an opening (24a) into which a gas generator (26) may be inserted, the gas generator of the type responsive to a control signal, for generating gas to inflate an air bag (32). The assembly including the air bag (32, 44, 50, 52), for protecting, when activated, an occupant of a vehicle, comprising an inflatable bag or sack (32), disposed in a compacted or stored condition, during periods prior to deployment, proximate a side of the cylindrical member (22) containing at least one aperture (30), the infatable bag, including an open end (46) disposed about the cylindrical member (22) to receive the gas and including relatively opposing flaps (50a and 50b) extending from proximate the open end and adapted to envelop the cylindrical member (22), the flaps, proximate a side of the cylindrical member, away from the at least one aperture, disposed in an overlapping condition, one to the other. A band of tearable material (56) is provided to secure the air bag in its stored or predeployment condition. L'invention concerne un ensemble (58) comprenant : un élément ou un boîtier (22) cylindrique creux comportant un orifice (24a) dans lequel un générateur de gaz (26) peut être inséré, ce dernier étant du type réagissant à un signal de commande, afin de produire du gaz pour gonfler un sac d'air (32). L'ensemble comportant le sac d'air (32, 44, 50, 52), destiné à protéger, lorsqu'il est activé, l'occupant d'un véhicule, comprend un sac gonflable (32), disposé à l'état compact ou stocké, pendant des périodes préalables au déploiement, à proximité d'un côté de l'élément cylindrique (22) contenant au moins un orifice (30), le sac gonflable, comportant une extrémité ouverte (46) disposée autour de l'élément cylindrique (22) afin de recevoir le gaz, et comportant des rabats opposés (50a et b) s'étendant à partir du voisinage de l'extrémité ouverte, et adaptés pour envelopper ledit élément cylindrique (22), lesdits rabats situés à proximité d'un côté dudit élément cylindrique, à l'opposé d'au moins un orifice, se chevauchant l'un par rapport à l'autre. On a prévu une bande de matière déchirable (56), afin de maintenir ledit sac d'air à l'état stocké ou de prédéploiement.
