Compositions comprising reactive emulsions of free fatty acids, and membrane lipids and their use in controlling insects and/or arachnids, and in particular, hematophagous organisms which can act as vectors for a great variety of pathogens. The compositions of the present invention are also useful for the modification of a subject's physiological and/or immunological response to, for example, a bite from an hematophagous organism as well as treating and/or preventing a disease caused by any pathogen transmitted by the organism to said subject.
