Provided is a method for determining a target polymer. A target burning property of a polymer and a target polymer is provided. Further, burning test conditions indicative of a burning test method and burning test parameters are provided. Also a property model is provided based on the burning test conditions. The property model is adapted to determine burning properties with respect to the respective burning test method. The property model is a data-driven model parameterized with respect to the burning test method to determine burning properties based on characterizing parameters of the polymer and the burning test parameters. Then burning properties of the potential target polymer are determined based on the property model, the burning test conditions and the digital representation. The determined burning properties of the potential target polymer are compared with the target burning properties and a target polymer is determined based on the comparison.
