Summary: | A semiconductor device includes a floating gate that can be charged in a nonvolatile manner. The floating gate is also structured as an optical waveguide, and may be optically coupled to a photonic circuit, such as an interferometer. Embodiments described herein can take the form of a semiconductor device including at least a source electrode, a control electrode, an insulator layer, and a floating gate separated from the source electrode and the control electrode by the insulator layer. For constructions described herein, the floating gate is an optical waveguide optically coupled to, and conductively decoupled from, a photonic circuit.
